Gabbert Smith

Virginia Gabbert Smith Hogg, 82, of Covington, died Wednesday, October 30, 2024 at The Springs Nursing and Rehab Center in Hot Springs.


She was born June 10, 1942, in Covington, a daughter of the late Vern E. Gabbert, Sr. and Vivian Pugh Gabbert. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Edward W. Smith, Sr.; and one sister, Peggy Redman.


Virginia worked for Jane Colby, Inc. for many years, as well as the former Aide’s Department Store, and Schewel’s Furniture in Covington. She attended church at Cornerstone Church in Covington and an avid Virginia Cavaliers fan.


Surviving is her husband, Ronald Hogg Sr. of Covington; two sons, Wayne (Aurora) Smith and Allen (Alicia Ailstock) Smith, all of Covington; two daughters, Susan (Greg) Hubbard of Covington, and Judy (Marc) Kassing of Sandwich, IL;...

Rowan Anthony Samuels, Sr., of Covington, died Thursday, October 24, 2024.


He was met at heaven’s door by his mother and father, the late Ms. Christine Emily Samuels and Mr. Henry Wesley Samuels; a brother, Mr. Denton “Mewood” Samuels; a sister, Ms. Marcia Samuels.


Rowan leaves to cherish his memory, his wife, Mrs. Lisa Samuels; five children, Tamara Samuels, Rowan Samuels, Jr., Venice Gayle, Aubrey Samuels, Dontae Samuels; seven sisters and brothers, Howard Samuels, Linford Samuels, Yvonne Samuels (Patrick Martin), Horace “Dannyboy” Samuels, (Tanisha), Sheridan Samuels, Marva Samuel Adams (Rupert Adams) and Evan Samuels; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Kenneth James “KJ” Davis, infant son of Anthony and ZaKalia Davis, departed this life on October 17, 2024.

John Robert “Bob” Rose, Sr., 86, of Rockingham County and formerly of Nellysford, Manassas and Covington, died Thursday, October 17, 2024 at the English Meadows assisted living facility in Harrisonburg.


Mr. Rose was born December 17, 1937, in Covington, a son of the late John Melvin and Bertha Griffith Rose. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Annie Mae Dowdy Rose; and a great-granddaughter, Madison Carter.


Bob graduated from Ferrum Junior College in 1958, where he met the love of his life, Annie Mae Dowdy. The two then transferred to Emory & Henry College where Bob graduated in 1960 with a Bachelor’s Degree in History & Political Science. He continued his education at the University of Virginia, obtaining his Masters’ Degree in Educational Administration in 1966, and his Doctorate of Education from Virginia Tech in 1976....

Eva Ann Horton Rickett, 94 of 111 S. Craig Avenue died Thursday, October 17, 2024 at her residence.


Ann was born June 14, 1930 in Covington, the first child of the late Thomas Edward and Watson Kelley Horton. She was a member of Temple Baptist Church and the Fellowship Sunday School Class. She enjoyed going to Young at Heart and mingling with everyone. Ann graduated from Covington High School in 1947. She was a homemaker most of her life and was happiest when surrounded by her loving family. She adored her grandchildren and loved being around them throughout their growing up years. In her later years, she was blessed with six precious great-great grandchildren who brought her more joy and happiness. Two of her favorite pastimes were reading and watching Jeopardy.

Eloise McConnell Crowder Hodges, age 87, of Covington, died Tuesday, October 15, 2024 at LewisGale Hospital-Alleghany in Low Moor.


She was born on January 23, 1937, in Botetourt County, a daughter of the late Ryland and Mary Broughman McConnell.


She was employed at Holiday Inn and the Covington Moose Lodge #610 for many years before her retirement. She attended Grace Brethren Church.


In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by an infant daughter; three brothers, Everette McConnell, Kenneth McConnell, and Wayne McConnell; one sister, Norma Johnson; and a sister-in-law, Edna McConnell.

Betty “Patty” McDaniel Breeden, 91, of Covington, died Monday, October 14, 2024 at Bath Community Hospital in Hot Springs.


She was born January 1, 1933, in Alleghany County, a daughter of the late George and Gertrude Tincher McDaniel. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Gene B. Breeden; and one sister, Doris Dilley.


Patty was the office manager for the Greenbrier Clinic for over 40 years.


Survivors include her son, Ricky Breeden and wife, Sherry of Covington; two grandchildren, Amanda Breeden and Chance (Lindsay) Breeden, all of Covington; four grandchildren, Brynley Breeden, Breanna Breeden, Maebry Breeden, and Brooks Breeden; one brother, James (Addie) McDaniel, all of Covington; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was born May 21, 1962, in Alleghany County, a daughter of the late Harry Eugene “Fudge” Tucker, Sr. and Betty Switzer Tucker Bogar. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sons, Robert Lee Paxton and Richard Allen Paxton, Sr.; two grandchildren, Richard Paxton, Jr. and Kendal Paxton; one sister who died in infancy, Bertha Sue Tucker; and one brother, Harry Eugene Tucker, Jr.


Janie loved the outdoors and especially enjoyed camping and fishing.

Angela Feury Morse, age 61, of Covington, died Tuesday, October 8, 2024 at her residence.


Angela was born March 28, 1963, in Greenbrier County, a daughter of the late Ammia Feury and Alice Windon Feury. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Wayne Feury and Gordon Feury.


Angela was a team lead at Walgreens in White Sulphur Springs for several years. In her spare time, she loved trips to the beach and catching up on her favorite TV shows.

Kathryn Hall Craft, 77, of Clifton Forge, died Saturday, October 5, 2024 at LewisGale-Alleghany Hospital in Low Moor.


She was born August 31, 1947, in Alleghany County, a daughter of the late Roy E. Hall, Sr. and Pauline Breeden Hall. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Dana Ray Craft; a sister, Linda Connor; and two brothers, Eddie Hall and Roy “Pepper” Hall.


Kathryn worked for Smurfit Westrock in Covington, retiring in 2013 after 44 years of service. She was a former member of the Covington Moose Lodge #610.


Survivors include her siblings, Steven E. Hall and his wife, Beverly of Covington, Dorothy Unroe and her husband, Randy, of Iron Gate, and Lee Worley and his wife, Corrine of Waynesboro; and a number of nieces and nephews.
