Clara Pearl Tucker Walton, 60, of Covington, died January 30, 2024, at her residence.


Clara was born November 23, 1963, in Alleghany County, a daughter of the late Everette Malan Tucker and Marilyn Hoke Tucker.


Mrs. Walton worked as a CNA at LewisGale-Alleghany for many years. Prior to her illness, she had attended The Church of God in Covington where she loved to sing. Affectionally known to some as “Boots” for her love of flatfoot dancing, she also enjoyed riding horses, hunting, and collecting pocketbooks. She was admired by her family for always being the life of the party.

Susan Gail Smith Scruggs got her wings and went to walk with the angels Friday, January 26, 2024, after multiple battles with Cancer.  She was 66 years old.


It would be wrong to say Susan lost her battle because she never stopped fighting.  When anyone else would have broken, Susan stayed strong.


Susan was born February 6, 1957, in Alleghany County, a daughter of the late Eugene Harvey and Violet Humphries Smith.  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister Ruby Jane Jones; five brothers; Edward Wayne Smith, Russell Eugene Smith, Robert Lee Smith, Charles Harvey Smith, and Donald Ray Persinger.


Susan was the Assistant Manager of the Kroger Deli in Clifton Forge until she retired.  She was baptized and attended Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church. Susans greatest love was her famil...

Thomas

Albert Thomas Waldron, 80, departed this life on January 26, 2024.  He was the sixth child born on March 31, 1943 to the late Edward Nathaniel Waldron and Beatrice (Brown) Waldron of Wrightsville, VA.  His six siblings (Alphonso, Gilbert, Nathaniel, Berniece W. Dooley, Delano and Lewis) preceded him in death.


His remaining sibling,Yvonne (Waldron) Young, grieves his passing and resides in Trenton, NJ.

Thomas was a member of Wrightsville Baptist Church in his formative years.  He graduated from Watson High School, Class of 1960.  From June 21, 1960 until June 20, 1963, Thomas honorably served in the United States Army.  During his military tour of duty, he received a Good Conduct Medal; the Parachutist Badge, Pistol Sharpshooting Badge and Expert Rifle Badge and First Class Gunner (81mm Mortar) commendations.

Wanda Sue Campbell Plumley, 63, of Covington, died Monday, January 22, 2024 at her residence.


Wanda  was born February 17, 1960 in Frankford, WV, a daughter of the late Dale and Elsie Frank Campbell.


She had been employed as an operator at WestRock.


Survivors include her husband, Barry A. Plumley of Covington; a daughter, Stacey N. Tenkouskiy of Pipestem, WV; two sons, Travis Hicks and his wife, Vanh of Forrest and Levi Caleb of Covington; four grandchildren, Nicolas Hicks, Maxim  Tenkouskiy, Evan Hicks, and Lilly Hicks; one brother, Randy Campbell; a niece, Chancey Campbell; and one uncle, Eugene Campbell.


In keeping with her wishes, her body has been cremated.


A memorial service is planned for a later date.

James Webster “Jimmy”, Boog” Powell, Jr., age 68, went to his heavenly home on Sunday, January 21, 2024, at Lewis Gale Medical Center, in Salem, VA.


Jimmy was born October 12, 1955, in Alleghany County to his parents, James Webster Powell, Sr. and Elta Mae Fertig Powell.


Jimmy, who affectionately was called “Boog” retired from Alleghany County Public Works after thirty years of service.


He is survived by the mother of his children, Cindy Hubbard Powell; his two sons, Jeremy (Kara) Powell of Covington, Josh (Cherie) Powell of Daleville; one daughter, Emily (Michael) Wheeler of Lyndhurst, VA; six grandchildren whom he adored, Nickolas, Benjamin, Evelyn, Caroline, Elias Powell, and Lucas Wheeler.

Wayne Allen Wright, Sr., 83, of Bedford and formerly of Covington, died Sunday, January 14, 2024.

He was born January 17, 1940, in Alleghany County, a son of the late Edwin F. and Etta Fridley Wright.

Wayne served his country in the United States Air Force. He retired from General Electric in Salem and was a member of VFW Post 2157 in Bedford.


Wayne is survived by his wife of 61 years, Betty Alfred Wright; a son, Wayne Wright, Jr. and his wife, Deborah, of Vinton; one daughter, Tressa Webb of Pulaski; four grandchildren, Dexter Wright, Michael (Sherry) Orange, Jr., Samantha Orange, and Sarah (Greg) Justis; three great-grandchildren, Camden Orange, Carlee Orange, and Kaidence Justis.

Mazie Brackman McAllister, 102, of Sarasota, FL and formerly of Covington, died Monday, January 9, 2024 at Sarasota Memorial Hospital in Florida.


Mrs. McAllister was born June 26, 1921 in Alleghany County, a daughter of the late Lewis C. and Ollie Hoylman Brackman. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James Wesley McAllister; a daughter, Shirley Bowyer; one grandson, Joey Bowyer; and two sisters, Pearl Clinebell and Marie McAllister.

Clifford Eugene Waldren was born on May 3, 1954, the second child and eldest son of Ellis and Frances (White) Waldren. He departed this life on January 8, 2024, at his home in Covington.


He attended public schools and graduated from Covington High School in 1973. He played football and went to Delaware State University on a football scholarship. He decided that “college was not for him,” so he enlisted in the Air Force and served honorably until his retirement in 1994. His military service sent him to many countries around the world and his main skill set was repairing jet planes and ensuring they were “flight worthy.”


Clifford was a strong, independent man who handled his business well. He was not one to seek help if he could do things on his own. He was a great brother to his siblings, and generous to those he loved. He was a gentle soul, who cared deeply for those who...

Allen Edward "Fishing Pole" Chambers, age 72, of Covington, died January 4, 2024, at LewisGale Alleghany Hospital in Low Moor, VA.


Allen was born July 13, 1951, in Gala, VA and was preceded in death by his parents, the late Shirley Thompson and Gyenetta Chambers Thompson.


After working for forty plus years at Westrock, he retired from working in the Power Department as a Team Leader and a Shift Forman.

Zora Nadine Bailey Tucker, 89, of 600 Montgomery Knob Road, died Sunday, December 31, 2023 at the Brian Center in Low Moor.


Mrs. Tucker was born December 1, 1934, in Alleghany County, a daughter of the late Lacy Lewis and Nora Persinger Bailey. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 69 years, Raymond Carter “Jim” Tucker; a son, Robert “Baldy” Tucker, Sr.; a grandson, Kenny Tucker; two daughters-in-law, Marie Tucker and Diann Tucker; four brothers and two sisters.


Mrs. Tucker retired from Halmode Apparel in 1993 after over 20 years as a seamstress. She was a longtime member and pillar of the Mountain Valley United Methodist Church. She enjoyed raising miniature horses, sewing, and spending time with family.

Vivian Annette Parrott, 71, of Clifton Forge, died December 31, 2023 at Shenandoah Valley Health and Rehab in Buena Vista.


Ms. Parrott was born November 7, 1952 in Columbia, SC, a daughter of the late Ellac and Mary Walker Parrott. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Jimmy Ray Geddings, and one brother, Thomas Parrott.


Vivian worked for many years as an LPN. In her spare time, her interests included crafts, baking, candy, cross-stitch, and spending time at beach. She also loved entertaining friends and family in her home.
