Gary Allen Lodge, Sr., age 69, of Covington, VA, died Tuesday, August 29, 2023, at Reston Hospital Center in Reston, VA. After his courageous fight with cancer.
Gary was born, February 19, 1954, in Alleghany County, and was preceded in death by his parents the late Russell Lodge and Clara Weiss Lodge and brother Richard Lodge, Ernest Franson father in-law. Grandparents Virgie and Harlan Weiss, Charles, and Virgie Lodge.
Gary retired as a rural mail carrier for the U.S. Postal Service. He was a former employee of Ford Motor Company, Hercules Inc. and Pave and Save and owned Discount Auto Sales in Iron Gate, VA. Mr. Freddie Eugene Tucker, Jr., 80 of Covington, transitioned to his heavenly home early in the morning on August 23, 2023, with his family by his bedside. He was born June 18, 1943, in Covington, VA to the late Matilda Richmond Tucker and Freddie Eugene Tucker, Sr. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister Anna Miller.
Mr. Tucker was a member and leader with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He retired from MeadWestvaco in 2006 as a Team Leader on #1 paper machine. He was active in the community as a former member of the Falling Spring Fire Department & the Falling Springs Rescue Squad Chaplain, served as Branch president of the Church and a Boy Scout Leader.

John Clinton “John Boy” May, III, 67, of Covington, died Friday, August 18, 2023 at LewisGale Medical Center in Salem.
John was born October 19, 1955 in Covington, a son of the late John C. May, Jr. and Sylvia Slaton May. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Terry Wayne May; one brother, Roger May; two sisters, Linda May and Jerry May; and his step-mother, Cynthia May.
John retired from Walmart as a door greater after more than 20 years of employment. A lifelong car enthusiast, John was a member of Kars Unlimited car club. He also volunteered for the Roanoke MDA Car Show as well as the American Cancer Society.

Charles Edward Hawkins, Jr., “Ed,” age 56, of Roanoke, died Thursday, August 17, 2023, at Roanoke Carilion Hospital, following a three-year battle with cancer.
Ed was born October 5, 1966, in Rockingham, NC, and was preceded in death by his father, the late Charles Edward Hawkins, Sr.
For over 37 years, Ed was a project manager for Creative Nursery and Landscapes. Ed graduated from Virginia Tech with a degree in Building Construction.
Surviving are his mother, Diana Cockman Hawkins of Roanoke; a sister, Heather Hawkins Terrell and her husband Kevin of Covington; and a niece, Daley LeGrand Terrell of Morgantown, WV.

Alfred Hunter Walton, Jr., 71, of Mt. Crawford, died Sunday, August 13, 2023 at Sentara RMH Medical Center in Harrisonburg.
Alfred was born November 20, 1951, in Covington, a son of the late Alfred H. Walton Sr. and Margaret Reynolds Walton. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters.
Mr. Walton worked in maintenance at Alleghany High School and LewisGale-Alleghany for many years. He was an avid bowler and a collector of many things. Above all, his devotion to God kept his faith strong throughout his life.

Johnny McKinley Miller 73, of Covington died Thursday, August 10, 2023, at Lewis Gale Montgomery Hospital, Blacksburg, Va.
Johnny was born December 30, 1949 in Alleghany County, and was preceded in death by his parents, the late Maynard E. Miller, Irene Plott Miller Davis and his wife Marion Neber Miller, also by two sisters and four brothers.
Mr. Miller was the owner and operator of Miller Logging for many years. He was a member of Lone Star Baptist Church and he loved and adored his family he also survered in the United States Army during Vietniam.

Brandon Lee Jordan, 42, of Covington, died Wednesday, August 9, 2023.
Brandon was born April 10, 1981, in Alleghany County, a son of John Small of North Carolina and Brenda L. Jordan of Covington. He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Lorenza Jordan.
Mr. Jordan served his country in the United States Army, serving in both Iraq and Afghanistan before returning home in 2007. He was a member of Wrightsville Baptist Church.

Michael Edward Switzer, 78, of Covington, died Wednesday, August 9, 2023.
Mr. Switzer was born May 3, 1945, in Alleghany County, a son of the late Milton and Annie Persinger Switzer. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Betty Bogar, Annabell Simmons, and Naomi Taylor; a grandson, Markie Smith, Jr.; and several nieces and nephews.
Mr. Switzer was a self-employed logger for many years.

Rev. Joseph Bertrand “J.B”. Broughman, Jr., 69, of Eagle Rock, died Saturday, August 5, 2023 at his residence.
He was born January 4, 1954, in Alleghany County, a son of the late Joseph B. Broughman, Sr. and Cornelia “Mickey” Frye Broughman.
J.B. was a tireless community servant. He began his career in law enforcement in 1979 with the City of Covington, filling various roles in the department, including being the first D.A.R.E. officer in the Alleghany Highlands. He was named Chief of Police in 2003 and City Manager in 2012 – serving in both roles until his retirement in 2016. In addition to his public service, he was the pastor of Highland Chapel Christian Church for over 30 years, a radio announcer for Covington High School football games for many years, and a part-time photographer for the Virginian Review. James William Tingler, Jr., 70, of Covington, died August 2, 2023.
Known to some as “Bill” and others as “J.W.”, he was born February 15, 1953, in Alleghany County, a son of the late Ann Ginger Tingler and James W. Tingler, Sr of Covington. In addition to his mother, he was preceded in death by his wife Karen Brennan Tingler, a son John F. Tingler, and a brother, Kevin W. Tingler.
Mr. Tingler was the owner and operator of Covington Farm and Fuel. He was a member of the Good News Fellowship Church. When he wasn’t working, he enjoyed being with his family, farming, and helping others in his community.
In addition to his father, J.W. is survived by his grandson, Axton; a sister, Barbara Armentrout and her husband, Kenny; a nephew, J.C. Armentrout; all of Covington; and the staff of Covington Farm and Fuel.

Louis Edward Burns, age 73, of Alleghany County, died peacefully surrounded by his family at Lewis Gale Salem Hospital on Sunday, July 30th, 2023.
Louis was full of faith and his family is assured that he is at peace in the heavens above. He was a member of Dunlap Christian Church. Louis worked at the Greenbrier for a number of years, where he thoroughly enjoyed maintaining the lawns and watching golf. He was an avid golfer and would frequently take golfing trips with his close friends before his health declined. Along with golfing, Louis was a walker.
He loved taking walks wherever he was and often surrounded by his family. Louis was a very outgoing person. He never met a stranger. Carl Vernon Mullins, 88, of Hot Springs, died Sunday, July 30, 2023 at Bath Community Hospital in Hot Springs.
Mr. Mullins was born on September 10, 1934 in Jenkins, Kentucky, a son of the late Logan and Ester Justice Mullins. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a step-son, Butch Tucker and one sister, Saundra Ireson.
Carl was a 1953 graduate of Dickinson County Memorial High School. He retired from Dominion Energy in 1991 as a Construction and Safety Supervisor. Retirement did not slow him down, as he was always busy - be it tinkering around the house, building, and tending to his HAM radios, or any number of projects he was working on.
