Sandra Fay Groves Beall, 67, of 1711 W. Jackson St., passed away on Tuesday June 13, 2023, at Lewis Gale Medical Center in Salem.


Mrs. Beall was born on October 12, 1955, in Cheverly, MD, a daughter of the late John Groves and Bertie Wolfe Groves Burgess. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, David Hall; a sister, Sharon Brookman; and a brother, Johnny Groves; a stepfather, Jim Burgess.


She worked in the office staff department for the Scott Hill Retirement Community as well as a member of Mount Carmel United Methodist Church.

Ruby Diane Miller Paxton, 77, of 6721 Ogle Creek Rd., went to be with her Lord and Savior, Thursday June 8, 2023.


Mrs. Paxton was born on January 22, 1946, in White Sulphur Springs, WV, a daughter of the late Robert Lee and Genevieve Marie Reed Miller. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband Alfred Wayne Paxton and a grandson Johnny Lee Meadows.


She was an active member of the Johnson Creek Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church. She was a member and served as Chaplin for the VFW Women’s Auxiliary. Diane was an avid fan of the PBR, attending many bull riding events through the years. She also enjoyed a good road and shopping trip.

Nancy Delores Richmond, 82, of 106S. Lexington Ave., passed away peacefully at home on June 8, 2023.

Mrs. Richmond was born on October 11, 1940, in Alleghany County, a daughter of the late Ernest J and Beulah Lemon Taylor. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Robert Lee Richmond, two sons, Billy Pond and Barry Pond, a daughter Georgie Head, a granddaughter Julia Martin, and four sisters; Elsie Campbell, Georgie, Mary, and Jackie.

She loved her two chihuahua, Trixie and Boss. She loved her children and grandchildren as well as taking car rides and eating out, especially banana splits.

Ms. Bolt was born November 11, 1942, in Covington Virginia. She was the daughter of the late Simon C. and Eloise McCoy Bolt.

Edna worked as a clerk at Social Services.

She is survived by a number of cousins to include Mary Long of Henrico.

A service will be conducted on Tuesday June 13, 2023 at 11:00AM at Alleghany Memorial Park

Interment will follow at Alleghany Memorial Park.

Sharon “Na” Renee Douglas Hoke, 43 of Covington, VA passed away on Monday June 5, 2023.

She was born January 17, 1980, at Alleghany Regional Hospital to Shawn “Doug” Douglas and Zettie “Kitten” Jennings both of Covington.

Sharon was a loving, unselfish person who loved her children, grandchildren, family, and friends with all her heart. She was a graduate from Covington High School. She enjoyed crafting and antiquing.

She was proceeded in death by her paternal grandparents Norman Lionel & Grace Bush Douglas; maternal grandparents Kenneth Dewey & Rowena Gann Tucker; uncle Barry Douglas; Vaughn Douglas & aunt Martha Douglas.

John Berkeley Ferguson, 77, of 2316 S. Grass Ave., died, May 31, 2023, at Lewis Gale Alleghany Regional Hospital in Low Moor.

Mr. Ferguson was born on May 31, 1946, in Covington, a son of the late Harry and Phoebe Walton Ferguson. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Sharon Ruth Ferguson in August of 2022, and a brother.

In keeping with his wishes his body has been cremated.

Surviving are his six children; Jules J. Carcanague of CA, Monica Carcanague of NJ, Jim Carcanague and wife Amanda of NJ, Eric Ferguson and wife Christina of Covington, John M. Ferguson and wife Marie of NJ, and Tonja Ferguson of NV; eleven grandchildren; twelve great grandchildren; three sisters; and a number of nieces and nephews.

A private service will be held at a later date.

The funeral arrangements are being handled by Arritt Funeral Home.

Thelma Jane Black Falls, 85, of 115 S. Marion Ave., passed away on Saturday May 27, 2023, at the Highland House in Clifton Forge.

Mrs. Falls was born on March 23, 1938, in Pocahontas County, WV. a daughter of the late Lake and Olive Gaylor Dreppered. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Calvin E. Falls in 2003; two infant sons; two sisters; and a brother.

Surviving are her two sons, Nelson Falls and Jeff Falls; two grandchildren, Vanessa Higgins, and Brittany Falls; four great grandchildren; a sister Betty Munsey and husband Tony all of Covington and a number of nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held on Thursday June 1, 2023, at 2:00 PM in the Chapel of Arritt Funeral Home with the Rev. Bill Gilliland officiating.

The interment will follow in Cedar Hill Cemetery.

The family will receive their friends on Thursday from 1:00 PM until service time at Arritt Funeral Home.

Mr. Jones was born February 13, 1950, in Clifton Forge; he was the son of Geraldine Brown Jones of Covington and the late Richard C. Jones, Sr. In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by a brother Marvin Jones in 2023 and a stepdaughter Dionne Moore in 2014.


Richard retired from Alleghany Regional Hospital after 35 years of service.

Martel Alexander Jordan, 33, of Roanoke, VA passed away unexpectedly on May 15th, 2023. He was born April 16, 1990 at Roanoke Memorial Hospital to Prenetha Jordan and Jerome Kelly.


He was a former student of Alleghany County High School. He received his GED in November of 2010. Upon entering the work field, he performed security detail in the entertainment industry and worked as independent contractor installing home appliances. Martel was baptized at Slate Hill Baptist Church in Roanoke, VA at an early age under the leadership of Rev. Dr. Harold G. Preston.


He was predeceased by his maternal grandmother Linda M. Jordan. Mrs. Audrey Elizabeth Mack, 96 years old, earned her wings as she transitioned peacefully at her residence, 1169 S. Lincoln Avenue, Covington, Virginia, on Friday, May 12, 2023 with her son by her bedside. She was born on December 18, 1926 in Richmond, Virginia to the late Ms. Virginia Hayes.


Mrs. Mack was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Mr. Lawrence Mack, her son Roland Switzerland Mack, Sr., her daughter Mrs. Marjorie Dethenia Brown and her granddaughter Ms. Shante Mack.


Mrs. Mack was baptized at an early age at Pine Street Baptist Church where she was an active member until her death. She loved singing in the Senior Choir and the Combined Choirs, she was a member of the Loyal Daughters Ministry and participated in other auxiliaries in the church.

Linda Carpenter Hippert, 82, of Covington, Virginia, passed away peacefully on Monday, May 8, 2023 at the Brian Center in Low Moor, Virginia.


Mrs. Hippert was born on June 23, 1940 in Highland County, Virginia. She was the oldest daughter of the late Lawrence Eugene and Mildred Taylor Carpenter. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Carol Carpenter Lipes and Frances Carpenter Nicely.


Linda was a resident of Covington most of her life. She attended Covington High School and was of the Methodist faith. Linda was a devoted daughter, wife, mother, grandmother and sister throughout her life. During early adulthood, she was known to many as “Speedy” while working as a waitress at several local eating establishments, including M.H. Mrs. Rutter was born July 27, 1963 in Alleghany County. She was the daughter of the late Len F. Hyler and Judith Teaford Hyler. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Howard T. Rutter, and a sister, Judith “Penny” Hyler.


Martha worked for over 30 years at the Woodland Health & Rehabilitation Center as the activities director. When not at work, she loved spending time with her family.
