Samuel Franklin Riley III, 56, of 132 S. Marion Ave., died, Friday November 25, 2022, at Lewis Gale Alleghany Regional Hospital in Low Moor. Mr. Riley was born on June 5, 1966, in Bath County a son of the late Samuel F. Riley Jr. and France Moats Riley. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother William F. Riley; a great grandfather figure Tommy Powers; and grandparents Beulah and Roscoe Simmons. He served in the United States Navy. He had attended Faith Baptist Church and was a member of the election boards. He loved to go to yard sales and the dollar stores as well as take long drives and take pictures of the scenery. He was a kindhearted person who would lend a hand before asking for anything, and he loved his dog. In keeping with his wishes his body has been cremated. James Edward Kincard, Jr., 81, of Covington, died November 18, 2022 at his residence. Mr. Kincaid was born October 23, 1941, in Alleghany County, a son of the late James E. Kincaid, Sr. and Nancy Hart Kincaid. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Robert Kincaid, and a daughter, Anna Kincaid McClung. James worked for many years as a steelworker with Norfolk Globe Iron and Steel and was a member of the Suffolk County Rescue Squad for 45 years. In his spare time, he enjoyed fishing the Jackson River from his family camp on Dunbrack Road, birdwatching, and was an avid NASCAR fan. Survivors include his son, James E. Kincaid III of Covington; three sisters, Janet (Frank) Alfred of Covington, Judith (Berkley) Toombs of Locust, NC, and Rebecca (Terry) Rose of Marshville, NC; one brother, Richard (Ginger) Kincaid of Sykesville, MD; numerous nieces and nephews; and a longtime friend, Larry McAllister of Covington. Carol Anne Arthur Patterson, 80, of 1114 Cherokee Trail, passed away on November 16, 2022, at Lewis Gale Alleghany Regional Hospital in Low Moor. Mrs. Patterson was born on February 12, 1942, in Rainelle, WV a daughter of the late Woodrow Wilson and Beulah Elizabeth Hedrick Arthur. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her son Terry Patterson in 2019 and a brother David Arthur. She retired in 2000 from Bath County Community Hospital as a Registered Nurse. She was a member of Mallow Presbyterian Church where she was a past Deacon and Elder as well as the past secretary of the Mallow Presbyterian Women’s Circle. She was also a past member of the Senior Friends group, the Red Hat Society, and a lifetime member of the WV All Stars. Marvin Vance Gibson, 71, of Covington, passed away on, Tuesday November 15, 2022, at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital. He was born May 11, 1951, in Clifton Forge the son of the late Marvin Edward and Rosemary “Polly” Gilliland Gibson. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four sisters; Gaynell Weese, Sissy Sizemore, Ruby Tawney, and Margaret Rose “Missy” Grimm; two brothers Buddy Gibson and Mark Gibson. He was a former employee of Kroger as well as a member of Mallow Presbyterian Church. He had been affiliated with the City Parks and Recreational for 23 years serving as a football and basketball coach. He was a teacher’s aide paraprofessional and a bus aide with the Covington High School. He was a coach for the Covington High School football team from 1992 to 2016. Phoebe Tucker Wright Albright 86, of Covington passed away on Sunday, November 13, 2022, to be with her Lord and Savior. She was born on March 2, 1936, in Alleghany Co., a daughter of the late McKinley and Della Tucker. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in by her first husband, Leonard Wright; a son, Ersel Wright; a daughter, Carol Wright; a son, Stephen Albright; and two brothers and three sisters. Phoebe had worked at the Jane Colby company for many years. Larry Allen Whitmer, 88, of Covington, died Sunday, November 13, 2022 at his residence. He was born July 26, 1934 in Covington, a son of the late Linwood E. and Ruby Rae Whitmer. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Patricia Mae Snead Whitmer; a brother, Wayne Whitmer; and his sister, Patricia Matheny. Larry retired as a truck driver from Cole’s Trucking. He had been employed at the former Hercules in Covington for many years. In his spare time, he was an avid NASCAR and Dallas Cowboys fan, loved working on and fixing everything from cars and jukeboxes – the latter being a specialty of his for many years. Leonard Elwood “Pete” Nicely, 80 of Covington died Saturday November 12, 2022, at Lewis Gale Alleghany Regional Hospital. He was born November 2, 1942, in Alleghany Co., he was the son of the late Leonard E. Nicely, Sr. and Ruth Forbes Nicely; other than his parents he was preceded in by a son Leonard E. Nicely, III and a sister Bonnie Hall. Pete was the owner of Nicety’s Taxidermy for many years, he received a number of awards for is work taxidermy and know all over world, He was member of the Master’s Measuring the International Safari Club, and the NRA. Liela Dudley “Lou” Mills of Scott ill Retirement Community in Clifton Forge, passed away on November 5, 2022, in the Reston Medical Hospital in Reston, Va. Liela was born on May 1, 1948, in Covington, to the late Lyle M. Dudley and Juanita Harlow Dudley, in addition to her parents she was preceded in death by two sisters, Gail Y. Dudley and Pamela Halsey. Mrs. Mills worked several jobs in Covington as well as Magnets USA in Roanoke. She is survived by three sons Clinton (Cam) Morgan of Roanoke, Shane Mills of Lynchburg, and Wesley Mills of Clifton Forge; and brother Jeff and wife Cindy Dudley of Clifton Forge and three grandchildren. In accordance with her wishes her body has been cremated. Liela will be missed by all that knew her and loved her. A private service will be at a later date in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery. He was born April 1, 1957, in Covington, he was the son of the late Clifford Ross and Victoria Alberta Pleasant of Covington, other than his father he was preceded in death by an Aunt Patricia Pleasant. Steven had served in the United States Army for ten years and worked at Lear, Inc. In addition to his mother Alberta, he is survived by his wife LaVonne Smith Pleasant of Covington, two daughter Sherrie Luckett of Covington, and Lakeisha Green of Delaware, two sons Theodore Luckett of Troutville and Calvin Green of Atlanta; fourteen grandchildren and nine great grandchildren: two sisters Lynn White and Zandra Pleasant all of Covington, and one brother Thomas Pleasant of Yorktown; also surviving a host of nieces and nephews. Mrs. Haynes was born November 24, 1949, in Roanoke, a daughter of the late Olen Madison Thompson and Thelma Francis Graham Thompson. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two grandchildren, Alania Fridley and “little” Ray Robinson; four sisters, Katherine Guillam, Mary Graham, Sally Clinebell and Vada Thompson; two brothers, Olen Thompson, Jr. and Frank Thompson. Before retirement, Thelma was receptionist for the U.S. Forest Service. She was a member of Lone Star Baptist Church. Bernice Hall Crawford, 95, of Covington, passed away Tuesday, October 25, 2022, at her residence. Mrs. Crawford was born April 26, 1927 in Clifton Forge, a daughter of the late Charles P. Hall and Letcher Love Hall. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Malkcom C. Crawford on October 17, 2022 and by twelve brothers and sisters. Bernice was a member of the Edgemont Presbyterian Church where she taught Sunday school and Bible school. She was a loving mother and grandmother who loved cooking and sewing. Surviving are her son, Steven Crawford and wife Kimmi of Covington; two grandchildren, Joseph A. Crawford (Jennie) of Fincastle and Amanda Hite (Kris) of Blacksburg; four grandchildren, Dax Crawford, Ledger Crawford, Atlas Hite and Bennett Hite.
