Alfreda Dooley Wallace, 74 of 338 E. Pine St. died Saturday October 22, 2022, at her residence. She was born October 20, 1948, in Covington, she was the daughter of the late Andrew C. Dooley and Mildred Quarles Dooley other than her parents she was preceded in death by her husband Reginald L. Wallace in 2021, two brothers Kenneth Dooley and Charles Dooley. Mrs. Wallace had worked at Medstar Montgomery Medical Center Hospital in Maryland for number of years. Surviving are her daughter Mildred Jefferson of Jessup, Md, two sons Ricky Jefferson of Covington and Ronald Jefferson of Ashburn MD. Eleven Grandchildren and four great grandchildren, also one sister Danette Sloan of Silver Springs Md., also surviving are number of nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be held Tuesday November 1, 2022, at 1:00 PM at Cedar Hill Cemetery with Rev. Stephanie R. Clarke officiating. Reba Beatrice Craft 81, of Covington died Saturday October 22, 2022, at the Brian Center Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Low Moor. She was born September 21, 1941, in Alleghany County, a daughter of the late Bittle and Lilly Huffman Craft. Surviving are her two brothers, Ryland E. Craft of Covington and Randall M. Craft of Joliet IL.; also surviving are number of cousins. In keeping with her wishes, her body has been cremated. Arrangements are being handled by Arritt Funeral Home....

Ronald Jeffries, Sr. Ronald Kemper Jeffries, Sr., 87, of 1936 S. Arden Ave., died, Monday, October 17, 2022, in Lewis-Gale Montgomery Regional Hospital. Mr. Jeffries was born July 12,1935, in Clifton Forge, a son of the late Edgar E. and Alice Patterson Jeffries. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother Jerry A. Jeffries Sr. and a sister Doris Stinespring. Ronald retired from Westvaco after forty-two years of service in the Research Department. He was a member of Christ United Methodist Church and member of the Covington Moose Lodge #610. He loved to trout fish, NASCAR racing, and Golf. Surviving are his wife of 65 years Joyce Gabbert Jeffries of Covington; a daughter Angie Shinault and her husband Ricky; two sons Ronald “Jeff” Jeffries all of Covington, and Scott L. Malkcom Coolidge Crawford World War II Veteran, Elder Emeritus, Westvaco Retiree Malkcom Coolidge Crawford, 97, of Covington, Virginia, passed away on October 17, 2022 at LewisGale Hospital - Alleghany in Low Moor Virginia after a short illness. 


Malkcom was born on December 19,1924 in New Castle, Virginia, a son of the late William H. Crawford and Alice Craft Crawford. Malkcom was a proud veteran of World War II. He served with the 5th Infantry Division, the third army as a Medic. He received a combat Medal Badge, 5 Major Campaign Stars and a Bronze Star. After his discharge from the Army, he joined the Virginia National Gard for several years. He was discharged from the Army on October 13, 1945, and went to work for West Virginia Pulp and Paper Co. (Westrock) on October 29, 1945. He worked in the boiler house 43 years before retiring in 1988.

She was the wife of Charles (Charlie) William King and the late Ernie Downey, Sr. She previously owned and operated New To You Consignment Store in downtown Covington. Jilleen was a member of Faith Baptist Church. Jilleen is survived by her husband, Charlie King; daughter Stephanie Schrieber (Maryland), and 3 sons Ernie Downey, II (Kathy) Covington, Brad Downey (Covington), and Tony (Melissa) Richmond KY. She has 10 grandchildren, Trey Downey (Angel), Michael Schreiber (Ian), Breanna Garrett (Daniel), Sarah Downey, Chelsea Gozzard (Brent), Katelyn Downey, Megan Downey, Jamie Downey, Hannah Bostic and Marlowe Downey. Viola Jane Thompson Whiteside departed this life on Thursday, October 13, 2022. She was born on September 27, 1931, in Carroll County, Virginia, to the late Baxter and Lucretia Jennings Thompson. She was a graduate of Radford University, with graduate study at the University of Virginia and University of Arkansas. Jane taught 38 years at the high school level, mainly as an English teacher at Covington High. Jane is survived by a daughter, Cynthia Farmer, grandchildren, Amanda (Cliff) Hernandez, Rachel (David) Becerra, Kirk Johnson, Ashleigh (Nolan) Tidwell, and five great grandchildren, Allora Larue, Tera Hernandez, Dominik Hernandez, Willa Grier Becerra, and Viola Tidwell. An active member of the Edgemont Presbyterian Church since 1958. Jane served as youth director, as well as a Sunday School teacher. Clyde Mackdow Terry, passed away at home in Clifton Forge, Virginia, October 13, 2022, with family by his side at the age of 93 years old. Preceded in death by his wife of 60 years Lois M. Terry; two brothers Henry Terry and Louis Terry; one sister Lucille Farley; and his parents Calvin and Annie Newell Terry as well as his beloved pets puggie, jack, and peanut. He was a Veteran of the Korean War and a member of the Curtis A. Smith Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1033. He had retired from Covington Tire Inc. Gary Lee Reynolds, 87, of Covington, passed away on October 10, 2022, at his residence. Mr. Reynolds was born on October 30, 1934, in Covington, VA a son of the late Howard and Mabel Williams Reynolds. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Helen Phillips Reynolds in 2011 and a son in law Charlie Looney. Surviving are his six children: William (Debbie) Reynolds, Deborah (Jerry) Peters, Gail Looney, Tina (Cody) Brown, Donald (Missy) Reynolds, and Deannie (Dwayne) Clapsaddle, nine grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; one brother Freddie Reynolds; two sisters Betty Owens and Bonnie Reynolds, and a number of nieces and nephews. Billy Joe Phillips, 50, of 1016 Hattie St., died, on October 10, 2022, at his residence. Mr. Phillips was born on November 14, 1971, in Covington a son of the late Billy and Judy Graham Phillips. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his grandmother who raised him Ruby Graham and a brother Ellis Phillips. He was a roofer for Phillips Roofing as well as for other companies. He had attended Covington Baptist Church and did survival stuff with Maegan; he was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed watching NASCAR with his good friend who has passed away Gary Goode. Daisy May Broughfman Durham, 80, of Union Hall, VA, passed away on October 10, 2022, at the Runk & Pratt Senior Living Community in Smith Mountain Lake. Mrs. Durham was born on May 29, 1942, in Rockbridge County a daughter of the late Earl C. and Nellie Iris Staton Broughfman. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband James Henry Durham in January of 2022 and her son in law Maurice Harris. Growing up in Hot Spring Virginia she started working at a young age, she worked babysitting then went on to work alongside her sister Shirley at the sewing factory Jane Colby. After she got married, she moved to Clifton Forge, VA and eventually moved to Manassas, VA where she work for a time at Peebles Department Store. She eventually left Peebles and started her career as a teller for First Virginia Bank. Mr. Miller was born in Covington on May 1, 1937, a son of the late James W. and Bonnie Baker Miller. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Virgie Smith Miller; a son, Ronnie Eugene Sorrells; a step-daughter, Barbara Harmon; a sister, Hallie Miller Dressler; and three brothers, Harry Miller, Earl Miller, and Gerald Miller.
