Sybil Marie Hoover, 91, of Covington, died Friday, August 19, 2022 at the Woodlands Health and Rehab Center in Clifton Forge. Ms. Hoover was born January 9, 1931, in Iron Gate, a daughter of the late Floyd and Laura Miller Hoover. Sybil graduated from Covington High School in 1948 and Lincoln Memorial University in 1952. She taught in the Alleghany County Public School system for over 30 years. After retirement, she volunteered at the YMCA as an aquatic exercise instructor for seniors, making many friends along the way. Surviving are her sister and brother-in-law, Barbara and Donald Kludy of Lexington; and one niece, Mary Laura Kludy, of Buena Vista. In keeping with Ms. Hoovers wishes, her body has been cremated. A celebration of life will be held on Thursday September 1, 2022, at 11:00 AM at Granbery United Methodist Church in Covington. The family will receive their friends from 10:00AM until service time. Billy Wayne Williams, 86 of Covington died Thursday August 11, 2022, at Lewis- Gale Alleghany Regional Hospital. He was born February 17, 1936, in Alleghany Co. to the late Hubert Williams and Annie Woodson Williams, other than his parents he was preceded in death by a brother Hubert Williams, Jr. Mr. Williams was retired from Hercules Inc. with forty-one years of service. Surviving are two nephews, Rocky Williams and his wife Sue and Michael "Todd" Williams all of Covington, four nieces; Elizabeth Huguley of Lynchburg, Theresa Bailey and John Lokan of Hot Springs, Suzie Brown and Her husband Mike of Covington, and Patricia Anderson and David Burch of Vancouver; also surviving are number of great niece and nephews. Robert Stephen Russell, 74, of 542 E. Dolly Ann Dr., died Wednesday, August 10, 2022 at his residence. 


He was born May 2, 1948, in Washington D.C., a son of the late Fredrick Russell and Clara Naylor Russell. Mr. Russell served in the United States Army and was a retired police officer with the Maryland-National Capital Park Police Department for over twenty-five years. 


He is survived by his son, Corey Russell and his wife Jenna of Huntington, MD; one daughter, Carrie Russell-Hargrove and Husband Paul of Austin TX; four grandchildren, Isabella Russell, Gianna Russell, Grayson Russell, and Camden Russell; two sisters, Vivian Brownlee of Winchester and Gail Timon of Staunton; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Vernon Eugene Quantz, 83, of 1509 Dunbrack Rd., died, Sunday August 7, 2022, at Lewis Gale Alleghany Regional Hospital in Low Moor. Mr. Quantz was born in Rowan County, NC a son of the late John S. and Bertha Freeze Quantz. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by the mother of his Children Marilyn June James Quantz; two brothers Percy and Norman Quantz; a daughter of his wife Janet Melvin, a son in law to his wife Dale Lowry Sr. and a nephew James Quantz. He served in the United States Navy and was a farm property manager. He was a member of the Mensa International Group. During his life he was employed by many different companies: Texas Instruments, Honeywell, Braniff International Airways, Measure-X software Company, and of more recent he was the owner and operator of Vernon E. Lillian "Ilene" Tucker Smith, 89, went to be with her Lord and Savior peacefully at her residence Saturday July 30, 2022. Mrs. Smith was a member of the Cliffdale Church of God of Prophecy. She spent many years as a seamstress for Halmode and Jane Colby sewing factories. Mrs. Smith loved a good laugh and to joke with her grandchildren. She loved the Lord and always remained strong in her faith. But, most of all she loved being with her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Patricia Shifflett Nicely, 83, formerly of 613 Locust St., died, Saturday July 30, 2022, at the Springs Nursing Home in Hot Springs. Mrs. Nicely was born on March 21, 1939, in Alleghany County a daughter of the late Everett and Virginia Steele Shifflett. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by father of her children Wilson E. Nicely; a daughter Tina Nicely; and a brother Robert Shifflett. She was a clerk at Downers Hardware and worked at Western Auto. She loved baking and being with her family. Jerry Thomas "Tom" Harris, 77, of 600 Summit Dr., died, Friday July 22, 2022, at the Virginia Veterans Care Center in Roanoke. Mr. Harris was born on February 16, 1945, in Alleghany County a son of the late Roy and Lucille Haynes "Polly" Harris. Jack Lee Powell, 80, of 9709 Rich Patch Rd., Low Moor, passed peacefully in his sleep on Sunday July 17, 2022. Mr. Powell was born on March 17, 1942, in Clifton Forge, a son of the late Howard and Margaret Phillips Powell. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters Ruby Rumpf and Peggy Robinson and a brother Howard (Buddy) Powell Jr. He was an equipment operator at the former Canfield Company and a former member of the Clifton Forge Fire Department. In his spare time, he enjoyed gardening, hunting, riding horses, going for rides up into the mountains and spending time with his family. Mrs. Walton was born February 18, 1942, in Alleghany County to the late McKinley and Della Tucker. In addition to her parents, she was proceeded in death by her husband, Charles Lacy Walton; two brothers, Haven and Samuel Tucker; a sister Irene Tucker; and a great grandson, Jacob Gilbert. Louise attended Cliffdale Christian Church and was a homemaker. Betty Jo May Hartsfield Caliguire, 92, died, Sunday July 10, 2022, at The Brian Center Rehabilitation and Nursing Care in Low Moor. Mrs. Caliguire was born on February 12, 1930, in Macksville, WV a daughter of the late Homer Angus and Arvella Harper May. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband William Leo Hartsfield; her second husband John G. Caliguire; a sister and brother-in-law Mary Ann Warner and Charles Jones Warner. She was a faithful and Charter member of the North Fork Baptist Church. She was a registered nurse with the Grant Memorial Hospital in Petersburg, WV. She went to the Davis Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in Elkins, WV. She was very proud of her title as Registered Nurse and was part of the nurses who wore white shoes, hats, and dresses. She was a very skilled nurse and enjoyed taking care of her patients. Ronald Curtis Chapman, 59, formerly of 1936 S. Lee St., died, Thursday July 7, 2022, at the University of Virginia University Hospital. Mr. Chapman was born on September 16, 1962, in Alleghany County a son of the late Charles "Chuck" and Josephine Thornton Chapman. He was a member of Mt. Carmel United Methodist Church and had attended Good New Fellowship Church. At Mt. Carmel he was an usher, served on committees, a member of the Mens Group. While living at Scott Hill he would help with Communion at church services. He was a volunteer at the Food Pantry and was a member and cook at a hunting club. He was 16 years sober. He would house and dog set for friends so they could go traveling especially his friend Rod Winge. In keeping with his wishes, his body has been cremated.
