Kathryn Sue "Susie" Arritt ,70, of Catawba, died, Sunday February 7, 2021 at her residence. Mrs. Arritt was born October 13, 1950 in Alleghany Co. a daughter of the late Roy "Buck" Arritt and Marie Fox Whitehead. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son Jason Ross and a brother Michael Arritt. Susie retired from the US Postal Service as a Postmaster with thirty-four years of service also she was a member of the Postmaster league. Surviving is her husband Jesse Cornelius of Catawba, a son Michael Ross, a granddaughter Tyler Ross and Brandon Morris of Catawba who she treated like a grandson, one bother Jeff Arritt of Richmond, one sister Reva Campbell of Vinton and an Aunt Mary Jane Spencer and her husband Mike of Covington. Lawrence James Gilbert passed away peacefully at his home on Friday, February 5, 2021, at the age of 67. Born July 15, 1953, in Pittsburgh, PA, he was the son of the late James Lawrence and Dorothy Triner Gilbert. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by Hannah Laramae, a baby born directly into heaven through miscarriage; and, by his son, Nathanael Lawrence. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Iris May Gilbert, whom he married on June 28, 1975, in Washington, PA. He was a 1971 graduate of Chartiers Valley High School in Carnegie, PA. He earned his Associates Degree in Biology from Community College of Alleghany County, Pittsburgh, PA; his Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Earth Sciences from California University of Pennsylvania; and, his Teaching Certificate from Radford University, VA. He did additional postgraduate work at several colleges, including Oklahoma State University, Stillwater; University of Idaho, Moscow; and, West Virginia University, Morganto...

Paul Lee Crizer Jr., 61, of 1322 S. David Ave., died, Wednesday February 3, 2021 at his residence.
Mr. Crizer was born December 29, 1959 in Covington the son of the late Paul Lee Sr. and Marie Hepler Crizer.
He worked at the Greenbrier Hotel as a housekeeper for a number of years. He loved to watch all the University of Virginia sports as well as play golf, read and spending time with his friends.
In keeping with his wishes his body has been cremated. Surviving are his wife of 20 years Dawn Martin Crizer of Covington, a step son Robert Cale and wife Liz of Oldsmar, FL., a step grandson Max Cale of Oldsmar, FL, Frank Hepler whom he thought of as his brother, and a number of cousins, nieces, and nephews. The funeral service will be held Sunday May 16, 2021 at 2:00 PM at Arritt Funeral Home with the Rev. Stephanie Clark officiating. Interment will follow the service at Alleghany Memorial Park

James Lawrence Thompson, Jr., 71, of Dunbrack Road, died February 1, 2021 at Lewis-Gale Alleghany Hospital in Low Moor. James was born on March 1, 1949 in Alleghany County, a son of the late James Thompson, Sr. and Geraldine Carter Thompson. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, David Thompson, Sr. He was employed by Covington City Schools for 43 years, retiring in 2010 as the head custodian for the Jeter-Watson and Edgemont school facilities. In his spare time, he enjoyed fishing, camping, and trips to South Carolina with his family. When not outdoors, he could usually be found enjoying one of the classic western movies he loved so much. She later attended Virginia Seminary and College (now Lynchburg College) in Lynchburg, VA. She worked at W.T. Grant and retired from Kmart after working numerous years. Betty Bates McDaniel Harvey, 91 of Snake Run Road, Covington, VA passed to eternal life in Christ, on Thursday, January 28, 2021 at UVA Hospital in Charlottesville following a fall at her home. Betty was born on Dec. 29, 1929 in Covington, Virginia to Cecil A. and Bamma Masters Bates. In addition to her parents, Betty was predeceased by her six brothers, her first husband William Ernest McDaniel, daughters Sandra Gale McDaniel and Shirley McDaniel Canterbury, son Kenneth Leon McDaniel, and granddaughter Amy Louise McDaniel. Betty was also predeceased by her second husband William Mann, who met and married Betty when she was a young widow raising five small children.
