Raymond Carter "Jim" Tucker, Sr., 90, of 600 Montgomery Knob Road died Wednesday, November 18, 2020, at his home. Mr. Tucker was born September 9, 1930, in Alleghany County a son of the late Robert Lee and Myrtle Tingler Tucker. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Robert "Baldy" Tucker, Sr, a grandson Kenny Tucker and a daughter-in-law, Marie Tucker, seven brothers and three sisters. He had retired in 1980 as a brakeman after over 25 years with the C&O Railroad. He was a longtime member and Trustee of the Mountain Valley United Methodist Church. Surviving are his Wife of 69 years, Nadine Bailey Tucker, of Covington; one Son, Raymond C. William Wayne Porterfield, 69, of 5511 Dunlap Creek Road died Monday, November 16, 2020, in Lewis Gale Montgomery Hospital at Blacksburg. Mr. Porterfield was born November 13, 1951, in Alleghany County a son of Louella Bright Boone Porterfield of Covington and the late William Haskell Porterfield. He had retired from TCI and the Dunlap Fire Department. Surviving in addition to his Mother are his brother and sister-in-law, Ronnie and Jeannie Porterfield, of Covington; two Sisters and Brothers-in-law, Kathy and Eli Bailey of Frankfort, WV, and Patty and Roger Byer of Covington; his niece, Missy Jackson, of Covington; his nephew, Timmy Byer and his wife, Summer, of Roanoke; his friend, Judy Frame, of Richmond; his aunt, Alice Sprouse, of King, NC, and his uncle, Lewis Boone, of Aiken, SC. Gary Edward Carson, 71, of 230 Grande Dr., died, November 13, 2020 at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital. Mr. Carson was born March 6, 1949 in Alleghany County a son of the late Finnie and Lula Mae Humphries Paxton. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a brother H.L. Paxton. Gary was a former manager of the Pilot Convenience Store in Covington. He also served in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War. Surviving are a son Kevin Carson and wife Jessica of Covington, a daughter Michelle Burgess and husband Shawn of White Sulphur Springs, WV, seven grandchildren; Brittany Martin, Shalee Kornhiser, Beth Malcom, Shawna Burgess, Natasha Brookman, Nicole Carson, and Kaiden Carson, eight great grandchildren, two sisters Vicky Ferris and husband Mike and Marilyn Brookman, three brothers Finnie Carson and wife Dreama, Mike Carson and wife Beverly, and Terry Paxton all of Covington, and a number of nieces and nephews. Albert Roy Edward Bowen, 72, of 104 Walton Church Lane in Clifton Forge, died, Thursday, November 12, 2020, at Lewis Gale Medical Center in Salem. Mr. Bowen was born July 20, 1948, in Clifton Forge a son of the late Charles and Bessie Campbell Bowen. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Ricky Bowen and Gary Bowen. He was an employee of the former Lear Corp in Covington and had worked as a security guard for the Omni Homestead. He also retired from Bacova Guild and was a driver for the Hallcon Company transporting Engineers and Conductors. Surviving are his wife, Betty Riddle Bowen, of Clifton Forge; a step daughter Lisa E. Perry of Manard, TX, one Brother, Steve Bowen and his Wife, Barbara, of Parkville, MD; three Sisters-in-law, Christine Gammon, Sue Lindsey and Donna Simmons; two Brothers-in-law, Michael Taggart and Raymond Taggart Jr.; several nieces and nephews and special friend, Lil' T. Jewell Kemper Anderson, 79, of 815 W. Jackson St, died, Tuesday November 10, 2020 at her residence. Mrs. Anderson was born on January 16, 1941 in Covington, a daughter of the late Lewis E. and Myrtle Dew Kemper. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death her husband Mont Ray Anderson in 2016, two sisters Wanda Hepler and Maxine Byer, three brothers Paul Kemper, Joseph Kemper, and Richard Kemper. She retired in 1986 from the City of Covington as a Clerk. She was a member of the Grace Brethren Church, and graduated from the Appalachian Bible Institute. She sang with the Kemper Trio Gospel group and loved animals. George Sherman Damron, 59, of 1312 S. Dalton Avenue died Monday, November 9, 2020, at his home. Mr. Damron was born June 12, 1961, in Jacksonville, Florida, a son of the late Paul Damron, Sr., and Helen Hess Damron. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant grandson, James Tinsley. He was employed as a truck driver for T&L Trucking of Center, Alabama. Surviving are two Daughters and Sons-in-law, Suzanne and Roger Horn of Covington and Latisha and Matthew Tinsley of Gadsden, AL; seven grandchildren; one Brother, Paul Damron, Jr., of Jacksonville,FL; one Sister, Debbie Villinski, of Lafayette, IN. and two nieces. Mary Blakeslee Nettleton Chase, 92, passed away peacefully on Monday, November 9, 2020, in Roanoke, VA. She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Carrie Nettleton; her sister, Carolyn B. Nettleton, and her beloved Husband, Allan S. Chase. Blakeslee was born March 2, 1928, in Richmond, VA, where she enjoyed a happy childhood at the family home, Carolton on the Hill. At the age of 13 she began education at Stuart Hall boarding school in Staunton, Virginia. After graduation from Stuart Hall, she attended H. Sophie Newcomb Memorial College at Tulane University earning her Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree. Following college she attended the Arts Student League in New York City and went to work at Woodward and Lothrop Department Store in Washington, D.C. In the fall of 1954, Blakeslee went to the University of Georgia to study at the Department of Landscape and Architecture, earning her Masters Degree in Landscape and Architecture in 1958. Lillian Otelie Mattson Pyne, 88, of 1000 Fairview Ave., died, Sunday November 8, 2020 at Lewis Gale Alleghany in Low Moor. Ms. Pyne was born June 5, 1932 in Brooklyn, NY a daughter of the late Albert and Edvarda Biland Mattson. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her first husband John P. Flynn Jr., two sisters Clara Jacobsen and Edith Terry. Lillian worked in Medical Transcription for Alleghany Regional Hospital and was a member of Parrish Court United Methodist Church. Surviving are three daughters and son in laws; Kathleen Beveridge and Gary, of Roanoke, Eleanor Wood and George and Theresa Harrison and Billy all of Covington, a son Timothy Pyne of Roanoke, five grandchildren, twelve great grandchildren, and a number of nieces and nephews. A private service will be held Friday November 13, 2020. The interment will be held in Cedar Hill Cemetery. The funeral arrangements are being handled by Arritt Funeral Home. Mrs. Talley was born November 29, 1949, in Covington a daughter of the late Lawrence and Helen Tucker Wright. She was a retired employee of Suntrust Bank in Richmond.
