Richard Wendell "Dick" Barner, 73, of 309 Jonestown Road died Wednesday, August 19, 2020, in Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital in Roanoke. Mr. Barner was born August 3, 1947, in Washington state a son of Richard L. Barner of Richmond. He was preceded in death by his Wife, Audrey Wright Barner in 2016 and by one brother. He was a veteran of the Vietnam War with the U.S. Marine Corps. He had retired as a designer for Acme Concrete Co. in Winchester. Surviving in addition to his father are two Sons and Daughters-in-law, Rick and Tracy Barner of Covington and Tony and Lisa Barner, of Union WV; four grandchildren, Cameron and Ashley Barner of Richmond, Kaitlyn and Jeremy Paxton of Covington, Scott Barner of Martinsburg, WV and Lauren Barner of Jacksonville, FL; one great granddaughter, Lexi Paxton, of Covington; one brother; two sisters and several nieces and nephews. Robert Dawson Smith, 81, of 100 Parkview Ave. died Tuesday, August 18, 2020, in Lewis Gale Medical Center at Salem. Mr. Smith was born October 26, 1938, in Alleghany County a son of the late Marcus G. and Ona Ferguson Smith. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his Wife, Helen Craft Smith, five brothers and one sister. Surviving are his Son, Anthony "Tony" Lewis and Dawn King of Covington; his grandson, Kyle D. Lewis, of Covington; his great granddaughter, Madelyn Jolene Lewis, of Covington; one Brother. Chris (Custer) Smith, of Covington; one Sister, Jeannie(Ron) Porterfield, of Covington two brothers-in-law, Tom (Diane)Craft, of Canton, Ohio; and Reginald(Connie) Craft, of Lynchburg; one sister-in-law, Audrey "Peewee" Bradley, of Clifton Forge and several nieces and nephews. Bell

Della Bell Moore, 80, of Powhatan was welcomed with the open arms by her Lord and Savior on Sunday August 16, 2020. Mrs. Moore was born June 18, 1940 in Covington, the daughter of the late Clyde Bell And Marie Alfred Bell. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband Theodore R. Moore, Jr. in 2015. She was a retired investigator with the Internal Revenue Service, and she was a graduate of Covington High School, Class of 1958, and had achieved enough credits for an associate degree. Della was a woman of Faith and attended Shiloh Pentecostal Holiness Church in Richmond. She enjoyed spending time with family and friends, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She enjoyed crocheting and knitting. In addition to being an avid reader she was also a published author of the book When I Remember, I Remember When. William Danny Plymale, 79, formerly of Scott Hill Retirement Community, died, Friday August 14, 2020 in the Alleghany Health and Rehab. Mr. Plymale was born September 28, 1940 in Covington, a son of the late George Henry and Trusby Alice Taylor Plymale. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by three sisters Mary Sue Plymale Woodson in 2019, Nancy Craft, and an infant sister, and one brother George Plymale. Danny was an operator at the Wynn's Precision Inc. and was a member of Grace Baptist Church in Madison Heights. He enjoyed playing the piano and auto harp as well as singing and was a member of the Facination Choir in Lynchburg. He loved to sit outside and watch it rain, fishing, and carpentry work. One of his favorite hobbies was playing Santa at the River Ridge Mall in Lynchburg. Shirley Powell Wright, 78, of 448 Winding Way died peacefully at her home surrounded by her family on Wednesday, August 12, 2020. Mrs. Wright was born May 24, 1942, in Alleghany a daughter of the late Robert and Annie Hipes Powell. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her Husband, Leonard M. "Fox" Wright, in 2019. Shirley was a longtime member of Mallow Presbyterian Church. She graduated from Covington High School in 1959 and had worked on every 1959 CHS class reunion. She had worked at the former Leggett Department Store for 16 years. She was devoted to her family and enjoyed arts and crafts, traveling and listening to music. Tonya Monique Coles, 51, of Chesapeake, formerly Covington, died Wednesday, August 12, 2020, in Chesapeake Regional Hospital. She was born June 11, 1969, in Covington a daughter of Debbie E. Coles of Covington. She was preceded in death by her grandparents who helped raised her, Norwood and Ardelia Coles. Tonya worked at Food Lion in Chesapeake, she also was graduate of Covington High School. Surviving in addition to her mother are her companion, Larry Turner, of Chesapeake; three sisters Rhonda Coles of Waldorf, Md., Tieshia Ridley and her husband Mike of Virginia Beach and Kashay Coles of Covington. Mrs. Tingler was born May 4, 1933, in Covington, the daughter of the late John and Mary Webb Ginger. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a Son, Kevin Tingler, Sr; a grandson, John F. Tingler; Daughter-in-law, Karen Tingler; Brothers, Johnny Ginger, Frank Ginger, Joe Ginger, Harry Ginger, and Tommy Ginger. She was a homemaker and was a member of the Good News Christian Fellowship. She loved baking, cooking, bowling, and being active with her church family where she was a mother figure to all. Surviving are her husband of 70 years, James W. Mrs. Kemper was born April 10, 1934, at Jordan Mines in Alleghany County a daughter of the late Samuel and Dora Chapman Kirby. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her Husband, Paul Eugene Kemper, in 2016, one sister, Jessie Paxton, and four brothers, Gene Kirby, George Kirby, Lewis Kirby and Eddie Kirby. She had retired from the former H.O.Canfield plant in Iron Gate and was a member of Covington Bible Church. Mr. Richmond was born August 1, 1944, in Alleghany County a son of the late James V. Morris and Sadie Richmond Bowen. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Diane Leigh Richmond, in 2014. He had retired as a mechanic with Bacova Guild. He was a member of Dunlap Christian Church and the Moss Run Hunt Club. He was a former member of the Covington Lodge #610, Loyal Order of Moose. Joel Patrick Goodwin, 65, of 206 N. High Ave., died, Tuesday July 28, 2020 at his residence. Mr. Goodwin was born May 31, 1955 in Covington, a son of the late Emmett and Barbara Toombs Goodwin. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife Rita Faye Meade Goodwin in 2018 and an infant sister Barbara Sue Goodwin. Joel retired from the paper machine at Westvaco in 2004. He was the owner of Goodwin Guns working as a gunsmith. Along with his job he was an avid outdoorsman and gardener, enjoyed making furniture and art, and golfing. He was involved in the former J.C. organization as well as the young democratic party in our area. Surviving are his son Chris Goodwin of Covington, a daughter Nicole Goodwin and fianc Aaron Pumphrey of Green Springs, OH, three brothers Jeff Goodwin and Charles Goodwin both of Covington and David and Peggy Goodwin of Richmond and two nephews and one niece.
