Kenneth Richard Lane, 74 of Covington, Va, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, Sunday March 21, 2021, at Augusta Health in Fishersville, Va. Kenny fought a long hard battle, but eventually succumbed to the disease vasculitis. Kenny was born April 16, 1946 in Cannellton, WV. He graduated Richwood High School in Richwood WV in 1964. He was preceded in death by his parents William Richard and Mary Katherine Lane, and two brothers and one sister. Kenny is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 54 years Sue, his son Rob and wife Stephanie of Staunton Va, two precious granddaughters Emma and Sara, two special nephews Mike and Tim Green of Covington, a special cousin Joe Pritt of Summersville, WV, a brother and sister, and numerous other nieces, nephews, and cousins. After high school, Kenny joined the WV National Guard and worked numerous jobs before joining the Covington Police Department in 1972 as a patrolman. Kenny was soon promoted to Detective Sergeant and later, Lead Investigator, over a distinguished career spanning 33 and a half years. Kenny was a graduate of the Virginia State Police Forensic Academy, as well as achieving certifications from several other agencies. After retiring from the Covington Police Department, Kenny went back to work part time as the Fraud Investigator for Alleghany County Social Services, and served on the Social Services Board. He spent 10 years with Social Services before retiring for good. Kenny's hobbies include golfing with his Brothers from the Shriners, especially his good friend Larry Wright, hunting with Rob, and spoiling his granddaughters. However, the pastime he enjoyed the most was bowling. Kenny started bowling in 1972 at the old Monroe Lanes. Over the next 45 years, Kenny bowled in multiple leagues, held numerous league and association offices, and was instrumental in ensuring that then Mallow Lanes met the strict standards required by the new USBC for accreditation. Kenny was inducted into the Alleghany-Bath Bowling Hall of Fame in 2014, and followed that honor by being inducted into the Virginia State Bowling Hall of Fame in 2018. Kenny was a big proponent of youth sports in the area. He served on the Alleghany County Recreational Board, and touched many young lives while coaching Little League baseball and football for approximately 12 years. Kenny was a 47 year Mason and Past President of the Clifton Forge Shrine Club. Kenny was made a Master Mason on January 29, 1977 and joined the Kazim Temple on September 5, 2001. He was President of the Clifton Forge Shrine Club in 2007. Kenny was very proud to be a Shriner, and was humbled by the good work done by the organization.
