James Robert Simpson, 94, of Covington, died Saturday, November 13, 2021, at his residence. Mr. Simpson was born May 17, 1927, in Alleghany County, a son of the late Grover Simpson, Sr. and Irene Sartain Simpson. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother and sister-in-law, Grover Simpson, Jr. and his wife Barbara; a sister and brother-in-law, Catherine Clements and husband Roy. James retired from the former Hercules, Inc. in Covington and worked for CFW Phone Co. He served his country in the United States Army during World War II, serving in the European theater. He was a charter member of Calvary Christian Church Disciples of Christ, were he served as Elder, Chairman of the board, Sunday school teacher, and youth leader. He was active in the Boy Scouts, serving as scout leader for many years. In his spare time, he enjoyed hunting and fishing. Surviving are a number of nieces and nephews, including Gregg Simpson and his wife Elizabeth of Florida, Jonathan Simpson and his wife Patti of Covington, Eric Simpson of Clifton Forge and Hans Simpson and Tonya Adkins of Buchanan. Also surviving are a number of great nieces and nephews and special friends, Laura and Jim Guth of Covington. The funeral service will be held Saturday November 20, 2021, at 2:00 PM at the Arritt Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Mike Warren officiating. The internment will be made in Cedar Hill Cemetery. The Curtis A. Smith post 1033 will have graveside rites. The family will receive their friends from 1:00 PM until service time.
