Charles William King, Sr., 86, of Covington, died Saturday, October 21, 2023, at LewisGale-Alleghany hospital in Low Moor.


Mr. King was born on November 17, 1936, in Washington D.C., a son of the late Murrill and Frances King Campbell. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Jilleen Downey King; a daughter, Deborah King; and a sister, Mary Harlow.


Charles was employed as a crane operator in the woodyard at Westrock for 43 years. He was a member of Faith Baptist Church where he was active with the local Men of Mission. He was also a member of the Ruritan. In his spare time, he enjoyed watching western movies, gardening, hunting, and fishing.


Surviving are three daughters, Connie King Jacobs (Fiancé Curtis Bosserman), Susan (Kevin) Traylor, and Frances King ; a son, Charles “Little Bill” King, Jr., all of Greenville; step-children, Tony (Melissa) Downey of Kentucky, Ernie (Kathy) Downey, Brad Downey, all of Covington, and Stephanie Schreiber of Maryland; three grandchildren, including Haylee Jacobs (Cody Shifflett), all of Greenville; one sister, Ellen Andrews of White Sulphur Springs, WV; numerous nieces and nephews; his best friend, Tommy Bostic of Covington; and a close family friend, Ashley Seabolt of Covington.


A memorial service will be held on Saturday, October 28, 2023, at 3:00 PM in the chapel of Arritt Funeral Home with the Rev. Andy Bellanger officiating. The family will receive their friends from 2:00 PM until service time.


The family appreciates and thanks the staff of LewisGale-Alleghany hospital for the care of their loved one.
